Position Summary

The Medical Sonographer performs routine diagnostic and vascular sonographic testing utilizing Doppler and color Doppler on organs or peripheral vascular structures. The sonographer will be responsible for assisting with interventional procedures, biopsies or drainages while using sterile technique under the direct supervision of the physician. US procedures are performed frequently without immediate supervision but in accordance to standards approved by the Medical Director. At SJH the sonographer may be required to assist with mammography procedures. Additionally, a sonographer may be required to rotate through one of the SJC outpatient centers as a part of their job duties and responsibilities. Maintains open communication and is available to component organizations and practioner sites for consultation.

Core Job Functions
- Knowledgeable of JC, OSHA, and ACR guidelines concerning the care of the patient. Demonstrates knowledge of proper aseptic technique, Universal Precautions, Time/Out, Read back/Verify and ALARA. Demonstrates knowledge of patients rights and use of required patient identification.
- Routine cleaning and maintenance of equipment is performed in accordance with manufacturer recommendation and department policy. Work orders involving equipment are entered promptly into the system. Staff education regarding care and operation of equipment is conducted annually and as needed.
- Maintains national certification/registry. Is competent in the use of all departmental equipment and is able to perform all procedures effectively.
- Maintains and works safely with equipment. Reports any issues with equipment to management for correction or repair. Uses Safe Patient Handling system appropriately.
- Charges exams accurately, anticipates supply needs and reports the information to the appropriate person.
- Interprets requests and performs exams in accordance with approved protocols. Communicates with radiologists and physicians about appropriateness of exams when in question. Maintains aseptic/sterile environment during invasive procedures and otherwise.
- Accurately performs QA on exams and enters patient history into PACS in appropriate status and time. Performs routine checks on PACs images and consults with management if standards are not met. Use of the transport system appropriately to ensure timely arrival/return of patients.
