Summary

  • Position Summary
    • Is accountable for the operation (quality and quantity) of the section/shift supervised. As a result of this responsibility, may be contacted on a 24-hour basis for professional opinions. Organizes the department workflow daily through the assignment of duties to technologists and technicians in such a manner as to achieve daily goals. Knowledgeable of laboratory test procedures with defined automated procedures, calculations and/or indicators that are age dependent. Supervises and performs testing procedures on adults, children, adolescents, neonate and geriatric patients. Responsible for training personnel and departmental inventory and ordering. Must stay abreast of advancements in his/her field. Is responsible for recognizing and implementing additional services to his/her department through collaboration with the Director, as trends in technology, instrumentation and physician ordering patterns suggest the need. Must set goals and objectives for the department. Evaluates supervised personnel. Assumes responsibility of Director and Operations Manager in their absence.

    • Bachelors - Required
  • Experience
    • 5-7 Years - Preferred
    • Minimum of four years experience required.
  • License & Certification
    • National Certification - Required
    • Currently registered or registry eligible by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or equivalent; meets CLIA requirements as Technical Supervisor for Laboratory as applicable.
  • Core Job Functions
    • Organizes daily workload and personnel to achieve acceptable quality standards, recognizing weak areas and implementing appropriate additions to training. Monitors turn-around times of specimens and deliveries to testing locations. Adapts readily to changes in workload and stressful situations, demonstrating confident and supportive behavior.
    • Perform, delegates and documents training of each new co-workers through formal orientation program and on-going competency assessment. Perform evaluation of supervised co-workers and conduct ongoing reviews. Provides director approved written procedures as needed and according to standards set by regulatory agencies.
    • Recommends and implements preventative maintenance schedules for supervised department in accordance with applicable guidelines by regulatory agencies such as CAP, GDHR, Joint Commission. Develops solutions to problems based on knowledge of biochemical theory or reactions, patient diagnosis, and instrument performance recommending and implementing changes in test procedures and techniques to correct problems. Maintains level of acceptable survey results required for licensure by regulatory agencies, documenting review of unacceptable survey results and initiating any necessary corrective actions.
    • Processes patient specimens, properly documenting identification of each specimen processed so that the correct results are available to the clinician. Demonstrates the ability to coordinate simultaneous tests/procedures with complete accuracy. Performs laboratory testing utilizing non-automated and automated, computerized equipment.
    • Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement monitoring and evaluation as requested. Reviews and monitors to assess and identify on-going problems so that effective resolutions can occur. Notifies Operations Manager of on-going problems, and provides suggestions and solutions to problems.
    • Recommends, implements and documents reagent, equipment, and instrument quality control in accordance with applicable guidelines of regulatory agencies. Competently performs or delegates performance of routine troubleshooting on instruments in supervised department/on supervised shift requesting service assistance from appropriate company . Keeps abreast of physician ordering trends and changes in instrumentation or technologies in order to recommend implementation of additional services.
    • Correlates abnormal laboratory results with pathologic and physiologic stats to determine validity and reasonableness of data. Recognizes unexpected results, errors and problems with patient tests. Performs analytical and decision making functions without direct supervision.
