Summary

  • Position Summary
    • Responsible for identifying and marking diagnostic cells on slides. As the primary identifier of cells that are suspicious or positive for malignancy, collaborates with the pathologist on the final diagnosis in these cases. Procedures are performed on specimens from adult, adolescent and geriatric patients. Performs the work with speed and accuracy. Keeps abreast of advancements made in Cytology and reflects current legal, ethical and professional standards in all areas of responsibility. Must have basic knowledge of histologic techniques such as cell blocks and special stains that might assist in making an accurate diagnosis.

    • Currently registered or registry eligible by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists CT(ASCP) or equivalent
  • Core Job Functions
    • Screens slides demonstrating knowledge of cytologic and pathologic changes related to cancer diagnosis and documents appropriately. Accurately prepares various cellular samples for examination by special staining techniques. Assists physicians with collection procedures when necessary.
    • Correlates abnormal laboratory results with pathologic and physiologic stats to determine validity and reasonableness of data. Recognizes unexpected results, errors and problems with patient tests. Provides pathologists with reasoned judgment regarding type of abnormal cells seen, the probable degree of histologic differentiation and when applicable, the probable site of origin.
    • Performs designated quality control measures. Records date of receipt, preparation/opening and expiration on reagents and stains. Competently performs data entry into Meditech for cytology specimens, properly identifying each specimen processed.
    • Corrective and preventative maintenance, instrument function checks and basic troubleshooting are performed and recorded per department policy. Maintains and checks stains for reactivity with control slides of known reactivity, recognizing unexpected results and problems with patient specimens. Identifies technical or instrumental causes of error.
    • Performs proficiency surveys or competency assessments as delegated by the Team Leader. Applies principles of education in teaching new co-workers. Assists physicians with details and limitations of laboratory test procedures.
