Summary

• Position Summary
  • Staff nurses work with the physician to educate and care for the patient throughout their course of radiation treatment. Nurses also gather information for follow ups and new patient consults for documentation for the electronic medical record.
• Education
  • Associate Degree in Nursing - Required
• Experience
  • 1-2 Years Radiation Oncology - Preferred
• License & Certification
  • Registered Nurse License with State of Practice - Required
  • National Certification - Required
• Core Job Functions
  • Coordinates with hospital and outside physician offices for surgical procedures. Maintains liaison with other disciplines such as social services, dietitian, speech therapy, physical therapy, pastoral care, and palliative care. Schedules appointments and procedures related to radiation therapy.
  • Assures patients understand their specific disease, diagnosis, treatment and follow up care plans. Facilitates communications between physician and patient when gaps in communications and understanding are noted.
  • Keeps equipment and facilities in good working order. Knowledgeable and maintains safety and infection control standards.
  • Assist physician in radiation implant procedures and other special procedures by doing pre and post procedure assessment and removal of devices. Maintains sterilization of equipment needed for procedures.
  • Reinforce physician's advice to patients regarding reactions to treatment and care. Involves patient and family in planning process. Identifies learning barriers, readiness to learn and cultural issues that can impact learning for patient and family.
  • Performs assessment and comprehensive review of history on new patients and established patients. Measures and documents vitals signs. Performs medicine reconciliation.
