Summary

  • Position Summary
    • The position of the Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) requires the candidate to be a certified tumor registrar. This role combines three main areas: The primary data abstracting responsibilities of a tumor registry; the data integrity and quality monitoring job duties within the registry; and the training and mentoring of tumor registrars on path toward certification. Primary data collection responsibilities will include abstracting cancer data accurately on all reportable tumors according to the multiple primary and histology rules by using the coding and staging system as determined by the Commission on Cancer and/or the Georgia Comprehensive Cancer Registry, National Cancer Database, and compliance with the South Carolina State Cancer Registry for cases accrued in off campus locations. Additionally, the CTR will use electronic medical records and other sources of diagnostic and treatment information in order to capture and document diagnosis, stage, extent of disease, treatment and the outcome on each reportable cancer in a timely manner. At times the CTR will perform tasks related to maintaining follow-up and, case-finding, in addition to other registry operations alongside Registry Co-Workers /or as assigned by the Cancer Registry Manager. With respect to quality management and data integrity, the CTR will be responsible for continual quality assurance and audits within the cancer registry database to ensure data integrity. The CTR performs quality audits of registrar abstracts and submits routine report to the registry manager. The CTR will be required to learn to run reports, compile data graphics, and participate in assuring data integrity in preparation of the registry's monthly and annual reports. The candidate is responsible for evaluating and reporting the data integrity of the Registry database against FORDS and American College of Surgeons (ACoS) criteria. Additionally, the CTR works closely with the Registry Manager to assure compliance with the Commission on Cancer's Rapid Cancer Reporting System data management. The CTR will also participate as a team member among the groups that function around critical standards associated with the quality and management of patient care across the oncology service line, this includes working closely in the processes of monitoring standards associated with Commission on Cancer accreditation requirements, National Accreditation Programs for Breast Centers standards for accreditation, National Cancer Database submission standards and state level cancer registry criteria and standards.

  • Experience
    • 1 - 2 Years Cancer Registry, Cancer Information Management, and Data Integrity Experience - Preferred
    • This position utilizes confidential information on a daily basis. Information may include confidential co-worker data, patient medical or financial data, sensitive corporate trade information, physician practice information. Disclosure could be damaging to SJ/C patients, medical staff, and organization. HIPPA violations are taken seriously. Candidate must be able to implicitly abide by confidentiality standards. Candidate must demonstrate professional appearance and attitude. Excellent organizational and communication skills are mandatory. Adaptability, flexibility, self motivated and ability to prioritize work assignments are necessary. Collaborative skills expected. Enthusiastic about enhanced learning opportunities and self motivated to continue learning the evolving diagnostic indicators, treatment regimens and staging updates associated with cancer care (i.e. conferences, classes, journals, webinars,etc.) Ability to learn and adapt to new technologies and software. Excellent research skills. Proficient Internet navigation skills.

    • Requires the CTR Certification. The Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) credential sets the standard for professional excellence in the cancer registry field. It is the nationally recognized standard for cancer registry personnel.
  • Core Job Functions
    • Routinely communicates to the multiple areas across the service line regarding standard compliance and reporting to assure the SAR is kept up to date. Accountable for compilation of data and metrics to meet accreditation reviews.
    • Identifies and assess potential quality issues through chart review and data abstracts and assist physicians with peer review. Provides follow-up monitoring, evaluation and tracking to assure resolution. Maintains statistics regarding review process and informs Risk Management of occurrences or issues with potential risks for Hospital and/or Medical Staff.
    • Participates in the acquisition of cancer information from diagnostic reports, treatment records and electronic records, both institutional and private practice-including follow up information, to complete the missing elements for a complete patient data records detailing the patient's complete cancer experience.
    • Accurately selects the primary site code for the cancer and the morphology code for the disease; accurately stages the extent of the disease using the diagnostic clinical and pathological reports and stages according to the most recent AJCC staging manual and in accordance with the Commission on Cancer FORDS manual.
    • Abstracts demographic, diagnostic, epidemiologic, treatment and survival information from inpatient and outpatient reports, records and electronic databases according to the abstracting timeliness as assigned by manager, i.e., within 48 hours from pathological resection report to within 4 months for complete account of treatment plan and activity.
    • Remains current on changes in regulatory data management to comply with state and national accrediting bodies, i.e., FORDS, American College of Surgeons-Commission on Cancer, National Cancer Database, Georgia Cancer Registry
    • Through team effort provides support to the committees. This includes data compilation, presentation, organization of conferences, compiling case presentation information and operating audiovisual equipment.
